Description
This session will describe and detail the process of Pathogen Reduction (PR), including the various chemical processes available, and under study. It will also cover:
• The integration of PR-treated platelets into the blood bank inventory of a tertiary care medical center
• The process of bringing a new PR platelet product into inventory, including the various roadblocks and caveats typically encountered
• Data on the use of PR platelets for neonates, infants, older children and adults
• The impact of the PR manufacturing process on the platelet, and on platelet, and red cell utilization
• Data on the impact of PR platelets on transfusion reactions
• Current status of PR for other blood components such as plasma and red cells, as well as the status of ongoing PR clinical trials
• The impact PR technology may have on the burgeoning concept of paid blood donors The participant will be able to:
1. Discuss the types of pathogen-reduction systems available, or under development
2. Discuss the clinical safety, and efficacy of FDA- approved pathogen reduction systems for adults and pediatric patients
3. Discuss how best to integrate pathogen-reduced platelets into the blood-bank inventory
