Dr. Wm. Andrew Heaton is a Scientific Advisor to LightIntegra and Secure Transfusion Services and provides graduate teaching in the Bay Area. From 2009-2015, he was system head of Transfusion Services at the Northwell Health System Hospitals. In that capacity he provided specialist transfusion services to the system, with a number of specialty areas including bacterial safety, transfusion analytic programs, and development of a blood product testing laboratory. Previously he was Chief Medical Officer for Novartis Diagnostics (Chiron Corporation) responsible for Clinical, Regulatory, and Scientific Affairs. University titles included Professor of Pathology at Hofstra NSLIJ Medical School, & University of California, San Francisco. During his previous 15 years, he was head of the American Red Cross (ARC) Blood Service in Norfolk Virginia. He is a graduate of medicine at Trinity College, Dublin University, and completed pathology training at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Following training he worked as Blood Bank Medical Officer at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. Later, he was a Research Fellow in blood banking at the University of Washington, St. Louis, Missouri. He is a US pathology/blood-banking specialist previously registered in the United Kingdom, and Republic of South Africa, and has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathology, the South African College of Medicine, and the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
