Most academic cancer centers maintain a substantial collection of poorly documented, poorly quality assured, non-intercommunicating, highly duplicative, single-purpose data repositories, causing obstacles to cancer research. The U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) is attempting to address this problem by promulgating its new international standard data model for biomedical research, the Biomedical Research Integrated Domain (BRIDG) model. According to the NCI, the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University was the first academic cancer center in the world to successfully design and implement a functioning cancer research information system based on the NCI-BRIDG model. Dr. Klumpp’s presentation will summarize the rationale, design, implementation, and current status of Thomas Jefferson University’s BRIDG-based cancer research information system.
